anāgārika Here are some links to reliable resources for Theravāda Buddhism that I’m fairly familiar with:

📜 Pāḷi Texts

E-piṭaka (website, app)

description

  • Languages: Pāḷi, Vietnamese, English, Tamil, and others

This is a new project with the entire Tipiṭaka, commentaries, and sub-commentaries translated by AI. The entre system was put together by Ven. Vietnam Dhammañāṇa. It uses several resources as reference, including the Myanmar Nissaya texts (detailed translations). It is not 100% reliable but quite good, especially the root texts (mūla) and first-level commentaries (aṭṭhakathā). It is great for someone who is learning Pāḷi or for research as it includes commentarial definitions of words, AI search limited to the Tipiṭaka, and more. It also has some unique features of linking key words to their commentarial passages, as well as TTS. It also offers a system to make your own translations of the Tipiṭaka in your target language.

Open Tipiṭaka (website, app)

description

  • Languages: multiple, including Spanish

This is a translation project led by Ven. PRC Sumana and the Pa Auk Society that includes the content of the Tipiṭaka in several languages translated by AI. Though not very reliable, well structured AI translations like this can be very useful for research and learning Pāḷi. It has several functions such as multiple-language TTS.

Tipiṭaka Pāḷi Reader (app)

description

  • Languages: Pāḷi and English; multiple scripts

This is an app made by Bhante USA Subhūti Thera. It contains most Pāḷi texts, English translations, dictionaries, and the content of the e-piṭaka (above) as well with a modern UI.

Digital Pāḷi Reader (website, app)

🏛️ Theravāda Monasteries

📊 View complete Theravāda Monastery Directory – filter by country, language, and area of focus.

Theravāda Buddhist Monasteries known to maintain the Theravāda Vinaya and traditional Tipiṭaka heritage.

Below is a list of personal highlights. For the complete list, click the link above.

Pa Auk Meditation Center

This is the Pa Auk monastery in Maymyo, Myanmar, where I ordained and spent about 7 years. It is a meditation center but also has an attached pariyatti center (for traditional Dhamma studies). There are other Pa Auk centers, several in Myanmar, such as in Mawlamyine (the very first), and in a few other countries. Check the list below:

List of Pa Auk Branches 🌐

International Institute of Theravāda

Monastery/Institute for study. The level is quite rigorous (as per 2026) and includes all traditional topics of study such as Pāḷi, Abhidhamma, Suttanta, Vinaya, etc. with 24 45-minute classes and 2 exams a week. Lessons are given in either English or Sinhala medium. The Institute is planned to also give academic recognition (BA and possibly MA). There are 2 courses: the 6-year long Nissayamuttaka Course (BA) and the 2-year long Parisupaṭṭhāpaka Course (MA). The first covers all requirements for a monk to be independent, and considerably more. The latter prepares monks further and allow them to teach.

Na Uyana Forest Monastery

This important Dhamma center in Sri Lanka is mainly for meditation with some optional classes, Dhamma talks, etc., mainly in Sinhalese. It’s a large area that includes 3 sections with different environments (from more to less secluded). There is also a nearby monastery for study. I recommend Bhante Ariyadassana as guide.

Wat Khao Sanam Chai

Monastery in Thailand focused on the study of Abhidhamma, Pāḷi, Vinaya, and meditation on a separate area. It is led by Bhante Thai Chandako Mahāthero and offers Dhamma talks daily and on Uposatha days.

🧠 Modern Research

Though not personally familiarized with their work, I’ll keep here a list of some modern research groups connected to meditation in general. This type of content can be useful for science-oriented individuals to see the more directly visible benefits of meditation, but they are not resources for deep Dhamma learning.

Harvard / MGH Meditation Research Program

Focuses on the neurobiology of advanced meditation, mapping deep states of consciousness and profound psychological transformations using advanced neuroimaging.

Center for Healthy Minds (University of Wisconsin–Madison)

Foundational institute in contemplative neuroscience that famously maps the brain activity and sustained gamma wave oscillations of long-term practitioners.

The Mindfulness Center at Brown University

Houses major projects on the clinical implementation of mindfulness, neurofeedback targeting the Default Mode Network, and the study of difficult contemplative experiences.

Oxford Mindfulness Foundation & Research Centre

A global leader in integrating Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) into mainstream psychological treatments and public health systems.

Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences

Conducts large-scale longitudinal studies mapping the long-term physiological and structural brain impacts of mental training and meditation.

University of Virginia: The Division of Perceptual Studies

Scientific studies on past-lives and extraordinary human experiences and capacities.
